Stardust

There was a lot of hype on this movie, i asked around and several people told me it was much a better than what they first thought.

But you wouldn’t know that from the summary. When i first read about it, it reminded me of another bad fantasy job like Narnia or Terabathia (or however you spell it) or dare is say it, the Bothers Grimm. But once i started to see it, it was very enjoyable. It of course is based on love and all that, but they include so much naturally occurring humour and wit, that you want to see this movie.

The well known stars maybe few, but well placed, De Niro has many a times been depicted as a hard-hitter overall, but a softy inside. Ian McKellen’s narration is above par as always.

The basic outline of the story is one we’ve all seen. somewhere near us is a fantasy land, where magic and witches and warlocks exist. The odd thing is, it’s just beyond a wall, rather a turn from the regular behind the cupboard or in the mirror. The Story is based on the novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman.

The main stars are well placed, Charlie cox comes off well as a bumbling fool turned prince charming, and Claire Danes, the typical save me heroine role. But it works, because of the comedy. The movie reminds me a bit of Shrek 1, they hate each other at first and the movie never takes that serious a turn as you’d expect it. Sure, people die, but there is enough humour to cover it all up. I’m usually not one for those soppy stories of him and her, but the comedy, the use of fantasy to make the movie interesting is well done. Narnia made it too obvious with it’s fighting cheetahs and birds, this has it just right. The elements they use are subtle, but noticeable. Witches in 3s, Royal family having literally ‘blue blood’, it all just works.

I’d say this is a good watch, maybe not cinema worthy, but def a good rental. It is long as are all fantasy like movies. I can;t remember seeing any short movie of this genre though. I won’t go as deep as Transformers with this one, it isn’t THAT good :p
